The story behind The idea

Autumn in the Northern Hemisphere remains one of my most loved seasons. Even though I knew at the end of Autumn, we would be sent into the depths of Winter. And yet, I still would anticipate and marvel year after year at the changing of colors.

My love for it, made me want to capture the journey of change. So around mid September, just before the leaves would begin to really change, I would set off on my own colorful journey.

2014: First year paint a leaf a day.

2015: Second year painting a leaf a day.

The journey began with a ziplock bag and a daily walk around the neighborhood. On those walks, I’d collect leaves that whispered of their beauty.

One by one, I would slip them into that ziplock bag. Once back home, I’d pick one (or two) to draw and then paint.

After a month of this, I would end up with a beautiful collection of 30ish finished pieces of art. While many of them I didn’t like as much, there were always several that I did. I think of them as The colors of Autumn. Many of my favorites sold or turned into the perfect gift.

Why a ziplock? It holds the moister of the leaves along with keeping any insects from crawling on you while you walk. Then if you can’t get lost in creativity right when you get home, slip the ziplock bag with your leaves in the fridge. The fridge will preserve to hold their color and from turning brown for a couple of days.
